CTE Driver Education
Possessing a valid driver's license is an essential credential for entry-level employment within this sector, such as careers involving doing installation, maintenance, or repair work at various sites. This program provides guidance and resources to students in every step of the driver education process from obtaining the learner’s permit, to spending sufficient hours on the road practicing driving, to completing the road test.
CTE Nontraditional Employment for Women Mentoring Program
Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades, helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future for themselves and their families. This mentoring program provides career exploration and work-based learning opportunities for young women enrolled in CTE tracks related to the building trades.
Local Union 14: Operating Engineers Mentoring Program
Local Union 14 represents operating engineers, who work as heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and surveyors in the construction industry, as well as stationary engineers, who work in operations and maintenance in building and industrial complexes, and in the service industries. This mentoring program provides guest speakers and site visits which exposes enrolled students to career opportunities within the operating engineering union.
National Center for Construction Education Research Certification Training
NCCER develops standardized construction and maintenance curriculum and assessments with portable credentials. These credentials are tracked through NCCER’s Registry System that allows organizations and companies to track the qualifications of their craft professionals and/or check the qualifications of possible new hires. Both CTE teachers and students are able to obtain NCCER credentials after completing proper training and coursework.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. There are educational programs, events and competitions that support students specializing in carpentry, electrical installation, HVAC, plumbing, and CTE overall.
Solar1 provides training in urban sustainability and allows both teachers and teachers to produce solutions to environmental challenges. Select students complete GPRO, a certificate program that teaches the people who build, renovate, and maintain buildings the tools to integrate high-performance construction and maintenance practices into their everyday work. Select teachers may also complete certifications offered by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), which is recognized in the field of renewable energy.
High-quality Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provide high school students with rigorous academic preparation and industry-validated credentials, linked to relevant work experiences in high-demand industries. Locally and nationally, education and business leaders are leveraging CTE as a powerful economic development strategy. As NYCDOE looks to further strengthen its existing CTE programs, we are seeking employers to host CTE teachers in an immersive summer externship. CTE externships are customized professional development experiences that occur within an industry-specific workplace, providing an “on the ground” understanding of economic and career trends impacting students, as well as work-based norms that can inform instructional practices. Employer hosts will indirectly influence the city’s future workforce, one teacher at a time.
