Healthcare: Highlights

Current Projects

Listed below are come of the current projects occurring through the CTE Healthcare commission:

Enhanced Healthcare Core Curriculum

The Office of Postsecondary Readiness in collaboration with the New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare, has developed an Enhanced Healthcare Core Curriculum that incorporates NYACH’s Core Competencies for Today’s Healthcare Workforce and prepares students for success in a wide range of healthcare occupation training tracks.

Train the Trainer Program

The NYCDOE Office of Postsecondary Readiness is partnering with LaGuardia Community College on a Train the Trainer program on LaGuardia’s new Medical Assisting Curriculum. CTE Medical Assisting instructors have already participated in curriculum training.

UASEM CTE EMT Program

The Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management and Borough of Manhattan Community College, with support of the NYCDOE Office of Postsecondary Readiness, will be creating a unique partnership for UASEM and BMCC to co-teach the UASEM CTE EMT program.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Radiology Essay Competition

Over 100 CTE students participate in the annual Memorial Sloan Kettering Radiology Essay Competition. Winners participate in summer internships at the hospital.

Teacher Externships

High-quality Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provide high school students with rigorous academic preparation and industry-validated credentials, linked to relevant work experiences in high-demand industries. Locally and nationally, education and business leaders are leveraging CTE as a powerful economic development strategy. As NYCDOE looks to further strengthen its existing CTE programs, we are seeking employers to host CTE teachers in an immersive summer externship. CTE externships are customized professional development experiences that occur within an industry-specific workplace, providing an “on the ground” understanding of economic and career trends impacting students, as well as work-based norms that can inform instructional practices. Employer hosts will indirectly influence the city’s future workforce, one teacher at a time.

The following companies and organizations offered CTE Healthcare Externships for Summer 2019:

▪ Montefiore
▪ Memorial Sloan Kettering
