Media Technology and Design
Since the 1960s Madison Avenue has been the center of the advertising and media world, and instrumental to the City’s economy and persona. This includes careers in advertising, public relations, television, film publishing and design services. Today, New York City has over 8,500 media and design companies and employees over 180,000 people. Over the last decade, New York’s foothold in this industry has continued to grow, and today employment in media and advertising is three times more concentrated here than anywhere else in the country.
Understanding this strength, the DOE has a robust Media, Design and Graphics Commissions, led by Chair Annette Wolf Benson and Vice Chair Jack Powers. The commission is comprised of 30 Media, Design and Graphics related CTE program with programs located across all five boroughs, and industry partners such as: Adobe, Apple, Tribeca Film Institute and the 4As.
For the school year 2014-2015 the Commission is focusing on:
- Providing an in-depth web design development training for teachers
- Expanding the City-Wide Graphics Competition
- Setting up more site visits and speaker series for schools
